the stones are of good quality and very well packaged. however, one stone was chipped on a corner (a little, 3mm) but that means that it was before packaging that the control was faulty! too bad for the price. as the chip doesn't hinder the use of the stone, i didn't make a complaint... i was too keen to use it ;-) but aesthetically it's a shame...

Stone looks fine, but cracked in one corner, with the top layer coming off: impossible to tell whether this happened in transit or when gift-wrapped... but still very fragile...

The edges on the 1000 side are less well finished (a bit rough ) than those on the 3000 side, which are nickel-plated. If you've mastered the position of the knife for sharpening, no problem, but the slightest error in knife positioning will hollow out the stone (if you run the tip of the knife over the stone, for example): I'm a beginner and perhaps still a little clumsy, but it seems a little fragile all the same. Admittedly, it's one of the least expensive stones, but it's not cheap either, and I was expecting a bit better! (and incidentally, a small corner on the 1000 side was broken, certainly due to transport...)
