General Status:
Spanish law strictly prohibits the public carrying of knives unless for professional, sporting, or other lawful purposes. Knives are categorized under armas blancas (bladed weapons) and are regulated under Royal Decree 137/1993.
Restrictions:
Prohibited for possession, sale, and carrying:
- Automatic opening knives (spring-assisted).
- Daggers and double-edged knives.
- Concealed weapons (e.g., sword canes).
Blade Length Limits:
Any folding or fixed-blade knife with a blade longer than 11 cm (measured from the hilt) is classified as a weapon and prohibited for public carrying.
Permitted:
Folding knives with blades shorter than 11 cm may be possessed but cannot be carried in public without lawful justification (e.g., during hunting, fishing, or professional use).
Warning:
Carrying a knife in public without a lawful reason is almost always illegal in Spain. Violations can result in immediate confiscation, heavy fines, or criminal prosecution. Certain types of bladed military memorabilia (e.g., bayonets, machetes) are also subject to strict regulation. Bearers must ensure they have a clear and provable justification when transporting any knife.
