THEOPINEL STORY
The Opinel knife was born in 1890 in the mountains of Savoy. Its founder Joseph Opinel was working in the family forge in the Savoy mountains, at Gevoudaz. Against his father's advice, he made a small knife that would be useful to villagers and farmers. He soon set up his own workshop and built ingenious machines for larger-scale production. Later, he moved his business to the outskirts of Chambéry, where his sons Marcel and Léon and grandson Marcel joined him to develop the brand. Joseph Opinel was an entrepreneur, engineer, inventor, designer and salesman. The Opinel knife is noble in its simplicity, sturdiness and functionality. The Crowned Hand stamped on all Opinel knives comes from an ancient tradition that Joseph was keen to respect: in 1565, the King of France ordered master cutlers to affix an emblem to their knives to guarantee their origin and quality.
OPINEL KNOW-HOW
When Opinel was first created, the blade was made of carbon steel. Today, the carbon steel version of the Opinel still exists: this steel is easy to sharpen, has an excellent cutting edge but is very sensitive to corrosion. This model is not recommended for use in damp environments, and the blade must be dried and greased after use. The stainless steel version is the most widely used today. It is highly resistant to corrosion, and its carbon content offers excellent cutting performance. Wooden handles are 95% sourced from French sustainably managed forests to protect the environment. Opinel uses beech, a grit, uniform wood, and hornbeam, a lightly grained white wood that reproduces colors well. The varnishes applied guarantee a high level of protection against stains and humidity. The POM handles are particularly robust, water and shock resistant.
