Opinel knives are the perfect representation of pocket knives: practical, foldable, sharp and French!
After decades of know-how and passion, Opinel knifemakers are now part of the French heritage and part of the collective unconscious, thanks to the efficiency and simplicity of the knives they produce.
The traditional Opinel range reflects this image! It offers reliable, long-lasting knives for everyday use.
This box contains an Opinel n°8 and a sheath that you can wear on your belt with complete peace of mind. Let's take a closer look at the qualities of these pieces:
The blade
The blade of this opinel is made of Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel, known for its strength and ease of maintenance. It has a high carbon content (approx. 0.4%), which further enhances its strength: the edge of the blade will be all the finer and sharper.
It then undergoes a special 2-stage heat treatment:
- tempering: the blade is heated to over 800°C and then rapidly cooled down.
- tempering: the blade is heated again, and then cooled very slowly.
Then comes the sharpening: an Opinel is sharpened at an angle of around 40° to ensure that the edge does not deteriorate too quickly, but is still very effective. This operation is carried out by hand.
The blade is also called Yatagan, thanks to its particular shape inspired by a Turkish saber, with the point raised. It is ground to a curved profile, guaranteeing efficient resharpening.
The ferrule
The ferrule is a very important element: it forms the junction between the blade and the handle.
The ferrule is rotatable, meaning that a new steel ring has been added to the one holding the handle and blade together. This rotating ferrule locks the blade when folded or unfolded. So you can use your knives in complete safety.
Opinel handle
Made of beechwood from French farms (mainly in the Jura region), it features a large slot for the blade. Because of the nature of the wood, each knife is unique: the knots, nuances and veining will be different each time.
It has been varnished to protect it from marks and humidity.
This little opinel will become your adventure companion: you can take it camping, hunting or hiking, but it can also be used to cut your meat efficiently!
Its rustic style adds a touch of authenticity. The crowned hand as a logo on the blade certifies its provenance!
Last but not least, the case includes a snap hook. So you can easily hang it on your bag, belt or bunch of keys! Your opinel will be quickly and easily to hand, while still being protected.
