Opinel knives are the perfect representation of pocket knives: practical, foldable, sharp and French!
The result of decades of know-how and passion, Opinel knifemakers are now part of the French heritage and part of everyone's subconscious, thanks to the efficiency and simplicity of the knives they produce.
The traditional Opinel range embodies all these qualities! It features reliable, long-lasting knives for everyday use.
This knife is a perfect example: the Opinel n°8 has all the features you'd expect from a pocket knife:
The blade
The blade is made of Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel, known for its strength and ease of maintenance. This steel has a high carbon content (approx. 0.4%), which further enhances its strength. As a result, the edge of the blade will be all the finer and sharper.
It then undergoes a special 2-stage heat treatment:
- tempering: the blade is heated to over 800°C and then rapidly cooled down.
- tempering: the blade is heated again, and then cooled very slowly.
Then comes the sharpening: an Opinel is sharpened at an angle of around 40° to ensure that the edge does not deteriorate too quickly, but is still very effective. This operation is carried out by hand.
The blade is also called Yatagan, thanks to its particular shape inspired by a Turkish saber, with the point raised. It is ground to a curved profile, guaranteeing high-performance resharpening.
The ferrule
The ferrule is a very important element: it forms the junction between the blade and the handle, making the whole piece even more solid.
The ferrule is rotatable, meaning that a new steel ring has been added to the one holding the handle and blade together. This rotating ferrule locks the blade when folded or unfolded. So you can use your knives in complete safety.
The handle
Made from French beech, the handle features a large slot for the blade. Because of the nature of the wood, each knife is unique: the knots, nuances and veining will be different each time.
It has also been varnished to protect it from marks and humidity.
So, this little opinel will become your adventure companion: you can take it camping, hunting, hiking, but it can also be used to cut your meat with efficiency!
Its rustic style adds a touch of authenticity. The crowned hand as a logo on the blade certifies its provenance!
