The Nontron is France's oldest knife, and has been made in the village of Nontron for centuries. The region has all the materials needed to produce quality knives, including nontronite, boxwood and the pure, cold water of the Bandiat river for tempering the blades. The reputation of Nontron cutlery has spread throughout France over the centuries, with journeymen cutlers from Paris often passing through the village.
In 1928, the "Coutellerie Nontronnaise" was created and was bought out by several owners. This continued until it was finally acquired by SARL Forge de Laguiole in 1992. Today, the cutlery workshop employs around twenty cutlers and has been awarded the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company) label.
