Mercator knives were created by the Otter brand in 1867 in Germany. Mercator is the Latin translation of the inventor' s name: Kaufmann ("merchant" in French). During the world wars, these pocket knives were the toolsof German soldiers. Then exported to the USA, they became famous in the Bronx district. Their popularity soared, thanks in no small part to gangsters!
Today, Mercator folding knives are popular for all kinds of activities*: hiking, hunting, cooking, fishing and more.To manufacture an Otter Mercator knife, 40 manual operations are required, and additional steps are necessary for those in Damascus steel! Only small quantities are produced, as quality is paramount. Each piece is meticulously checked during the 40 steps to ensure that there are no defects. German quality means perfect finishes and a blade that's as beautiful as it is effective.
The blade of this Mercator 10726.D folding knife is made of 256-layer damascus stainless steel. Stainless steel protects your knife from corrosion. The magnificent patterns on the blade are the result of 256 layers of steel of varying hardness, called damascus steel. The quality of the cutting edge makes it a pleasure to use every day! What's more, the blade is easy to re-sharpen with a sharpening steel.
The 11cm handle is made of brass, a lightweight material with a golden color! The Otter logo is engraved in the middle of the handle. Like the Douk-Douk orHigonokami, the handle is thin and light, in folded metal. It is fitted with a leather lanyard, allowing you to hang it on your wrist for a more secure grip. The pump lock on the back of the handle locks the blade in the open position, preventing it from bending inadvertently.
