Mercator knives were created in 1867, and equipped many German soldiers during the 1st and 2nd World Wars. The Mercator K55K knife went on to become legendary and popularized by Americans, who called it the "black cat knife". Mercator is the Latin translation of its creator Kaufman. The first K in K55K also refers to the name of the founder Kaufman; the number 55 refers to the number of the Hochstrasse street where the brand's workshop was originally located; the last K refers to "Katz" (German for cat). More than 40 manual steps are required to make an Otter Mercator knife! In order to take particular care over the quality of the cutting edge and finish, the Otter brand manufactures its knives in small quantities.
