Otter' s Mercator knives were created in Germany in 1867. Mercator is the Latin translation of the creator's name: Kaufmann ("merchant" in French). Soldiers in the German army were equipped with these pocket knives during the war. Later, the Mercator folding knife was exported to the USA, where it was sold by the thousands in the Bronx. Gangsters made it famous!
Today, Mercator folding knives are prized by traditional knife enthusiasts and lovers of elegant, handcrafted knives alike, as are French Douk-Douk knives and Japanese Higonokami knives. In all, it takes 40 steps to make an Otter Mercator knife, and all by hand! The emphasis is on quality, with only small quantities produced. Thanks to this handcrafted manufacturing process, each piece is meticulously checked at every stage, the finish is perfect and the cutting edge worthy of German quality!
The blade of this Mercator 10426 folding knife is made of XC75 carbon steel. The sharpness of a carbon blade is far superior to that of a stainless steel blade, especially when hand-worked by the manufacturer. With a hardness of 57HRC, the blade is easy to sharpen and retains its edge for a long time. A simple stroke with a sharpening steel or whetstone helps to restore the edge quickly.
Important: carbon blades tend to oxidize when exposed to corrosion. It should therefore be cleaned by hand and wiped with a cloth after use. A patina will appear on the blade over time; this is normal and helps protect it from rust. You can coat the blade with mineral oil from time to time to further protect it from oxidation.
The 11cm handle is made of metal, more precisely black-lacquered folded steel. This is the first knife ever created with a folded steel handle. The handle is thin and light! At the end of the handle, a bezel allows you to insert a cord for a more secure grip. This knife features a pump lock that secures the blade when open, preventing it from folding unexpectedly during use.
This carbon steel Otter Mercator knife will be the perfect ally for hunters, hikers, campers and traditional knife enthusiasts alike! Adopt a legendary knife!
