Every cook has at least once in his or her life had trouble storing his or her cutting equipment: drawers full, not enough room to put a block on the worktop...The magnet bar proves to be a very practical solution!
The Essences Creations bar is a hand-crafted creation by Romain Abeille. This passionate craftsman creates superb magnetic bars. Each one is unique, and takes months of work to bring to life.
But how does he do it?
- First, he selects good-sized pieces of wood from which to cut the finest parts to create the bars.
- Next, the wood is scalded. What is scaling? It's an attack on wood by fungi: the tree's sap ferments and is attacked by lignivorous fungi. It's a natural process that can happen to any piece of wood that's been damaged or left in the damp for too long. In our case, it's the craftsman who deliberately provokes this attack in order to create the unique patterns on the surface of each magnet bar. In effect, the wood tries to combat this attack, releasing tannins to stop the fungi developing. This is how the random black patterns you can admire on each bar are created! Warming up takes at least 6 months, as a certain level of humidity and temperature must be reached to promote it. It then takes a good while to dry! The craftsman stops the heating process in a controlled way by stabilizing each bar with resin, under vacuum. This will definitively block the humidity responsible for fungal growth.
- Once all this has been done, each magnetized bar is polished to a soft, pleasant feel.
- Magnets are placed on the back of the bar, at both ends. In this way, each knife placed on its surface is held in place by a magnet at the top of the bar, and a magnet at the bottom. The result is impeccable: the knife sticks perfectly to the smooth wooden surface. This bar can hold up to 6 knives.
- You'll see that the back of the bar has two screw slots for wall-mounting (fastening system not supplied).
- As a final touch, the craftsman's logo is pyrographed on the corner of each bar, for even more authenticity.
Important information:
Because the bars are unique, it's impossible to predict the patterns that will appear on their surface. For example, on a piece of raw wood weighing around twenty kilos, it is possible to obtain only 2 or 3 usable pieces, since the patterns created by heating are so random.
As a result, it's not possible to choose the aesthetics of the bar you order, and that's part of the beauty of a handcrafted piece: it's a surprise!
Note also that the bar measures approximately 2.5 x 11 x 50 cm, but it's possible that the size may vary by a few centimeters, both in width and length (once again, the artisanal process doesn't allow for a completely standardized size).
