The blade
Made of Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel (known for its strength and ease of maintenance)n it has a high carbon content (approx. 0.4%) in its alloy, which further enhances its strength. As a result, the blade's edge is all the finer and sharper.
It then undergoes a special 2-stage heat treatment:
- tempering: the blade is heated to over 800°C and then rapidly cooled down.
- tempering: the blade is heated again, and then cooled very slowly.
Then comes the sharpening: an Opinel is sharpened at an angle of around 40° to ensure that the edge does not deteriorate too quickly, but is still very effective. This operation is carried out by hand.
The blade is also called Yatagan, thanks to its particular shape inspired by a Turkish saber, with the point raised. It is ground to a curved profile, guaranteeing high-performance resharpening.
The handle
Made from French hornbeam. Due to the nature of the wood, which has only a slight grain, it is easy to apply a color that will last for a very long time. This khaki-colored handle will add an original touch to your legendary opinel.
What's more, the small leather cord at the end of the handle allows you to carry or hang the Opinel easily and efficiently on any support (key ring, belt...).
The ferrule
The ferrule is a very important element: it joins the blade to the handle, giving the whole piece added strength.
The ferrule is rotatable, meaning that a new steel ring has been added to the one holding the handle and blade in place. This rotating ferrule locks the blade when folded or unfolded. So you can use your knives in complete safety.
