The inventor of Douk-Douk folding knives is Gaspard Cognet, who created this traditional knife in 1929, initially for the inhabitants of Melanesia. Later,this pocket knife enjoyed great success in Africa, becoming Algeria's national pocket knife in 1939, when the country was a French province. The idea of the Douk-Douk as an emblem came to him after leafing through an illustrated dictionary. The Douk-Douk is a sacred god in Melanesia. A drawing of this spirit is stamped on the handle of each knife. Today, the Douk-Douk pocket knife is appreciated for its solidity, the quality of its cutting edge and its attractive price!
Cognet cutlery manufactures these knives in their workshop in Thiers, in the pure tradition of Thiers cutlery. The emphasis is on craftsmanship, since the various stages are almost all carried out by hand. In all, 38 steps are needed to produce a Douk-Douk!
The blade of this Douk-Douk 815 folding knife is made of Sandvik steel, a completely stainless steel. It is forged from a single block of steel, for added strength. It is then heat-treated to a hardness of between 58 and 59 HRC. The knife's sharpening angle is worked by hand using a water grinding wheel. Surgical steel has the advantage of being highly resistant to corrosion, unlike carbon steel models, which can quickly show signs of oxidation in the presence of moisture. This steel therefore requires little maintenance, and the cutting edge can be sharpened quickly with a simple sharpening gun. On the blade, arabesque motifs are applied by electrochemical marking.
The 11cm handle is made of green chromed metal. The spirit of Douk-Douk is engraved on the handle, with the words "Modèle déposé" ("Registered design") underneath. The green color brings a touch of pep to this traditional model!
You caninsert a lanyard to secure your grip, thanks to the loop at the end of the handle. Douk-Douk knives don't have a locking catch: the blade simply locks into place by coming into contact with the handle while the knife is in use.
