Gaspard Cognet created the Douk-Douk brand in 1929. The decision to choose the Douk-Douk as the emblem for this traditional folding knife came to him after leafing through an illustrated dictionary. In Melanesia (the islands above Australia), the Douk-Douk is a god and an integral part of the culture. His image is engraved on the handle of every knife. This folding knife became the national pocket knife in Algeria in 1939, when the country was still a French province. Today, the Douk-Douk folding knife is still renowned for its sturdiness and attractive price!
These knives are made in Thiers by Cognet, in the pure tradition of Thiers cutlery. In all, 38 steps are required to make a Douk-Douk folding knife, and almost all of them are done by hand!
The blade of this Douk-Douk 815/440 folding knife is made of Sandvik 14C28N steel. The blade's strength is enhanced by the forging process (the blade is sculpted from a single piece of steel). It is then heat-treated to a hardness of 58/59HRC, and the knife's edge is ground with a water-grinding wheel. The advantage of the steel used is that, unlike carbon blades, it is highly resistant to corrosion and requires very little maintenance. This is the knife that fishermen in particular love! The edge can also be quickly maintained with a simple pocket or kitchen knife sharpener. The arabesque pattern on the blade is a distinctive feature of Douk-Douk knives.
The handle measures 9cm and is made of chromed metal (chrome on nickel). The shiny finish adds design and modernity. The handle is engraved with the Douk-Douk spirit.
Steel rivets join the blade to the handle. At the end of the handle, a bezel allows you to insert a small cord to secure your grip. Douk-Douk knives are not equipped with a locking notch: the blade locks naturally while the knife is in use, coming up against the handle, but the position is never locked.
