The blade
Made of Sandvik stainless steel, the blade has a high carbon content (around 0.4%), guaranteeing excellent strength and long-lasting edge retention. In the Opinel workshops, these blades are worked according to a process that ensures their exceptional longevity:
- tempering: the blade is heated to over 800°C and then rapidly cooled down.
- the tempering operation: once heated again, the blade is then cooled very slowly.
The cutting edge is then sharpened at 40°, giving you both excellent cutting performance and good resistance to wear.
With its snake-like shape, this blade enables you to cleanly pick your mushrooms by cutting the stem, without tearing off the mycelium. The result: clean, beautiful finds and protected undergrowth, ready to offer even more treasures!
The ferrule
The ferrule is a very important element: it forms the junction between the blade and the handle, making the whole piece even more solid.
Unique to Opinel, the ferrule can be turned. A steel ring slides into place, allowing you to lock the blade in either open or closed position. The result is increased safety, both during transport and use.
The handle
Made from French oak, the handle features a large slot for the blade. Because of the nature of the wood, each knife is unique: the knots, nuances and veining will be different each time.
The handle's cut-out lanyard makes transporting the knife even easier. Simply thread a cord or ring through the handle for a tool that's easy to hang on a belt or bag.
A coat of clear varnish protects it from moisture and marks, while preserving the authentic look of the wood.
The brush
