The knife case is the ideal companion for cooks and catering professionals. It's in this attractive case that you store your kitchen knives, so you need to take great care in choosing the right one. Here are a few tips from our team to help you find the knife case best suited to your needs! First we'll talk about empty cases, then we'll talk about full cases!

How to choose an empty case?

1/ Soft or hard case?

We can distinguish 2 families of cases: soft knife cases, generally made of nylon, and rigid knife cases.

Nylon cases are very light, but sometimes fragile if you load too many knives or don't take care of them. On the other hand, they are easy to clean, which is a great advantage!

Rigid knife cases are inevitably heavier, but at the same time much more solid, and can be kept for years without damage. Note that rigid knife cases are more expensive than nylon ones.

2/ How many slots for my knife case?

We advise you tobuy a knife case with more slots than you need at the time of purchase, as you'll always have a few kitchen utensils you hadn't thought of that will fit in when the time comes.

3/ With or without closure?

It all depends on the use of your case! If you're a student, it's best to opt for a knife case with a padlock or lock, to keep your kitchen knife paraphernalia safe and sound.

4/ Which size to choose?

You still need to be careful about the size of the knife case you buy, as some cannot accommodate long-bladed knives such as salmon knives, slicing knives, etc...

5/ Which brand for my case?

Knife cases are like any other product. There are good and not so good. If you pay the right price, you're sure to get a quality knife case with a fine finish. Take the KAI knife case, for example, which costs more than some other empty knife cases, but has a much better interior and exterior finish!

How to choose a full knife case?

When you want to buy several knives, it's a good idea to look at cases, which are more attractively priced than individual knives.

1/ Which case is right for my job?

2/ How much should you spend on a knife case?

This is a very interesting question. Entry-level cases generally contain a lot of knives for very little money (say, 10 knives for around €50, so €5 per knife not including the price of the case). It's very tempting, and a great deal when you're on a tight budget or moving out of your parents' house and into your very first cosy nest, for example. Be careful, though, this kind of knife will do for a few years, but it's an investment for the short/medium term.

If you want long-lasting knives, opt for a case containing fewer knives, but quality knives that will last between 10 and 30 years. Count on around 30€ per knife to be sure of acquiring quality knives (i.e. 150€ for a 5-knife case). Sabatier cases , for example, offer excellent value for money.

If your budget allows it, top-of-the-range cases always have something extra to tempt us: whether it's the design or the quality of the steel. We're thinking of Wusaki cases and their 10CR steel knives, for example. These are the kind of knives that make cooking a pleasure!

3/ How many knives should I choose?

This question is closely linked to the previous one, since it will depend, among other things, on your budget. If you have no idea, we recommend you start with a case containing 4 or 5 knives. There's nothing to stop you from adding to your case by buying other knives individually (just be sure to check the number of knives the case can hold)!

Remember to read the contents of the case carefully, so as not to buy a case containing knives you'll never use (like a boning knife for a vegetarian, for example ;) ).

In conclusion, thepurchase of a knife case should be done with care. If you'd like further advice, or if we haven't answered all your questions, please contact us via our contact form or on our social networks, and we'll be happy to guide you!
