Practical, simple and versatile, the famous Opinel N°08 knife is dressed in a sober, modern hue to follow you on all your nature walks, camping trips and picnics. Today, Opinel employs 130 people who contribute to the daily production of its folding knives, which are made in Chambéry, France.
The blade
The Opinel N°08 features an 8.5cm-long blade made of sturdy Sandvik 12C27M stainless steel. The alloy contains 14.5% chromium, making the blade highly resistant to corrosion.
The blade has the traditional Opinel Yatagan shape. Inspired by a Turkish saber, it has a raised tip and is ground to an exclusive cambered profile that makes its edge finer, sharper and therefore more resistant. The blade is sharpened by hand at an angle of around 40°, enabling high-performance resharpening.
The ferrule
This Opinel is equipped with the Virobloc® system: the ferrule rotates and locks to ensure safe use of your knife. When locked in the open position, the ferrule prevents the blade from folding over your fingers and cutting you. In the closed position, the ferrule keeps the blade retracted so that it won't open if you're looking for your knife in your pocket or backpack. What's more, the ferrule serves as a junction between the blade and the knife handle for added strength.
The handle
The handle of this Opinel knife is made of hornbeam wood from French forests. It's a hard white wood, easy to work with and with little grain, making it ideal for staining. The black-brown water-based stain is applied with a woodstain and then coated with a varnish to protect it from moisture and dirt. This dark tint gives your knife an elegant appearance. A small leather lace completes the handle at the end, allowing you to easily hang the knife wherever you need it: your belt loop, your backpack, your keys...
