This is a very complete set, ideal for completing a collection as well as for carrying out a variety of tasks effortlessly. For example, the smaller ones will enable you to open letters neatly, do small sewing jobs, carve wood... The larger ones will be perfect for hiking, hunting, cutting cheese, ham...
Each piece of this set features 3 elements that are inseparable from opinel knives:
The blade
The carbon steel of which it is made is the historical raw material of Opinel knives. Unalloyed and with a high carbon content, it offers excellent hardness, guaranteeing a fine, long-lasting edge that resharpens easily. However, the high carbon content of this steel makes it extremely hard, but also highly susceptible to corrosion. This is why it should not be left in a damp environment (the dishwasher, for example, is a no-no!) and must be dried with a cloth after each wash. It's also important to know that, over time, the color of the blade will inevitably change (and small spots may appear), depending on the level of humidity in the air or the acidity of the food being cut, but this is perfectly normal! If you want to give it extra care, you can oil it from time to time.
After cutting, it undergoes a special 2-stage heat treatment:
- tempering: the blade is heated to over 800°C and then rapidly cooled down.
- tempering: once heated again, the blade is then cooled very slowly.
This operation gives the blade excellent strength, guaranteeing maximum durability for these versatile knives.
Next comes the sharpening stage: an Opinel is sharpened at an angle of around 40° to ensure that the edge does not deteriorate too quickly, but is still very effective. This operation is carried out by hand.
Also, the blade is called Yatagan, thanks to its particular shape inspired by a Turkish saber, with the point raised. It is ground to a curved profile, guaranteeing efficient resharpening.
The ferrule
The ferrule is a very important element: it is the junction between the blade and the handle!
On models n°06 to n°12, the ferrule rotates, i.e. a new steel ring has been added to the one holding the handle and blade together. This rotating ferrule locks the blade when folded or unfolded. So you can use your knives in complete safety.
Opinel handle
Made of beechwood from French farms (mainly in the Jura region), it features a large slot for the blade. Due to the nature of the wood, each knife is unique: the knots, nuances and veining will be different each time.
It has been varnished to protect it from marks and humidity.
Their rustic style adds an extra touch of authenticity. The crowned hand as a logo on the blades certifies the provenance of the pieces!
Finally, the wooden box is both simple and effective. Its light tone brings a touch of warmth to the entire box, and its glass display case provides optimum protection for all the blades, as well as allowing you to display your knives for all to see. You can give it as a gift with your eyes closed!
On knifeleader, you'll find all the gear you need for adventure!
