The steak knives in this set all feature an original design by Henk Schiffmacher, the famous Dutch tattoo artist. The son of a butcher, the tattoo artist learned from an early age to recognize and appreciate a good knife. Homey's naturally called on him to design a range of knives for which he could express his passion for tattooing, cooking and the butcher's trade.
Each blade features a different motif designed by Henk Schiffmacher, but has one thing in common with the others. At the top of the design is a Niho Mano, a triangular shark's tooth that is very much in evidence in Polynesian tattoos, and is a major inspiration for the tattoo artist's work.
Tattoos are indeed native to Polynesia. Polynesians proudly wear their tattoos because they have a strong symbolic value. For them, sharks are divine ancestors who symbolize strength. With their sharp teeth, they cut meat with ease. The blades of Homey's by Schiffmacher knives echo this symbolism.
These 4 steak knives feature an 8cm blade in 1.4116 stainless steel, a strong, corrosion-resistant alloy. With a hardness of 57HRC, the German alloy ensures an efficient blade that's easy to sharpen. The smooth blade of these knives cuts easily through meat without damaging it.
Each blade has a unique pattern, so you can dress your table in an original way. In fact, their shape is inspired by the traditional Corsican shepherd's knife, with its narrow top and raised tip. The choice of such a blade is not insignificant. Farm life in Corsica required a sturdy, reliable knife for a wide range of tasks. As Henk Schiffmacher himself received a Corsican shepherd's knife for his tenth birthday, Homey's paid tribute to him by associating this blade shape with his tattoos.
The steak knives have handles made from walnut burl wood, an outgrowth of the tree trunk composed of buds, gourmands and other wood hairs that give it its distinctive appearance. This growth is visually characterized by a rounded grain alternating between light and dark shades. Each knife handle is thus unique to the piece of wood from which it was carved.
The wooden inserts are attached to the knife tang by two brass-like rivets, for added strength. A bolster with the same look links the blade and features a Niho Mano and a pirate's head, Henk Schiffmacher's signature. Finally, an eyelet on the heel of the handle lets you take the knives with you by hanging them from your key ring.
The 4 knives are presented in a superb foam-filled black box to protect them. No risk of them colliding or getting damaged. An ideal gift for lovers of tattoos and sturdy, functional knives.
