Choose the Opinel N°9 folding knife for the sharpest knife on the road!
Opinel knives are designed and manufactured in France with the greatest respect for family tradition. The Opinel family launched its first folding knife in 1890 in the heart of the Savoy Alps, and today benefits from a century of experience that has made its reputation.
This Opinel N°9 is in the image of the brand: traditional shape, high-performance steel and noble wooden handle.
The blade
The 9cm blade of this folding knife is made of Sandvik 12C27M stainless steel. This Swedish steel was specially developed for Opinel and is renowned for its sharpness.
It achieves a hardness of 57-58 HRC, synonymous with easy maintenance. 12C27M stainless steel enables the blade to resist oxidation and abrasion.
During manufacture, the blade undergoes a 2-part heat treatment:
- Tempering: the blade is heated to over 800°C, then rapidly cooled down.
- Tempering: the blade is heated again, but this time cooled very slowly.
The blade is then sharpened at an angle of 40° to prevent the wire from wearing out too quickly, while remaining highly effective. Sharpening is done entirely by hand. In addition, the traditional Opinel logo is engraved on the blade to give it an authentic touch.
The shape of the blade is typical of the Opinel style, known as Yatagan. Its shape is inspired by a Turkish saber, with a raised tip. The blade is ground to an exclusive cambered profile, giving it a highly resistant edge and guaranteeing efficient resharpening.
The ferrule
The ferrule of an Opinel knife is very specific. As well as acting as a junction between the blade and the handle, it locks the blade for added safety, thanks to the Virobloc® system. Once opened or bent, the blade cannot move. A plus once the knife is stored in your backpack or kitchen drawer, as you can't cut yourself.
The handle
On this Opinel N°9 knife, 3 noble wood handle options are available:
- Oak: this is a hard wood with a high tannin content that makes it highly resistant to insects and fungi. This wood comes from French forests and has a beautiful yellow-brown appearance with straight, even grain. The handle is varnished to resist humidity and dirt.
- Walnut: this is another hardwood with a brownish-yellow or grayish color. Sourced from French farms, its grain is often dark, giving the knife a rustic, authentic appearance.
- Olive: this is a typically Mediterranean wood, pleasant to the touch and highly aesthetically polished. Its grain is often dense and sinuous, giving the knife an appearance ranging from golden yellow to orange.
All in all, this folding knife is the ideal knife to slip into your backpack for your hikes, or into your cooler for your picnics, but it's also perfectly at home as a table knife or a knife for cutting sausages at the aperitif!
