Opinel designs folding knives in the ideal format for picnics and hikes. They are made in France at the family business in Chambéry, where 130 people are currently employed.
The blade
The Opinel N°06 features a 7cm blade in Sandvik 12C27M stainless steel, which is highly resistant to corrosion. It contains 14.5% chromium for this purpose. It also contains more carbon than the average, giving the steel strength and sharpness. This composition gives the knife a hardness of 57-58HRC, ensuring easy daily maintenance.
The shape of the blade is inspired by a Turkish saber, and is called Yatagan: the point is raised and ground to an exclusive curved profile, making the cutting edge extremely resistant. The blade is hand-sharpened to an angle of around 40°, and resharpening is easy and efficient.
The ferrule
In addition to serving as the junction between the blade and the handle, the ferrule plays a safety role when using the knife. The Virobloc® system holds the blade in position (either open or closed) to prevent injury. In the open position, it cannot close on your fingers, and in the closed position it cannot open.
The handle
The knife's 9cm handle is made from hornbeam. This white wood from French farms is ideal for staining, as it has very little grain. A water-based stain is applied with a woodstain and covered with a protective varnish. A small leather lace at the end of the handle makes it easy to hang your knife wherever you like: your car keys, backpack or belt loop, for example.
