The Smith's story began in 1886 in Arkansas. Originally, the company sold only Arkansas stones, the sharpening stones originally used by Native Americans. Arkansas stones are dense, grit stones perfect for the finishing stage. They are best used with fine oils such as camellia oil. Compared to a Japanese stone of equivalent grit, Arkansas stone is generally less abrasive but much more resistant to wear. Arkansas stones provide a razor-sharp, polished edge. Smith's still offers quality Arkansas stones today, as well as a wide range of other sharpening products and accessories.
