Maintenance of ceramic whetstones
Ceramic whetstones require very little maintenance. Simply sponge clean with a little washing-up liquid. To scour a very worn stone, you can opt for a more astringent solution such as clay stone. Ceramic whetstones have the advantage of being very low-maintenance, and of lasting for a very long time after use.
Why choose a ceramic stone?
Why choose a ceramic stone rather than a diamond or natural Sharpening stone? Ceramic stones are perfect for fast, effective sharpening, bringing a razor-sharp edge to all your blades. Their hardness enables them to sharpen a wide variety of steels, even very hard steels. Only diamond stones are harder than ceramic stones. Ceramic stones are made from aluminum oxide or synthetic silicon carbide powder. This powder, mixed with a binder such as clay or cellulose, is then molded. After heating to very high temperatures, the mixture is cooled and then cut into the desired shape. For some ceramic stones, additional abrasive particles of synthetic sapphire are added. Ceramic whetstones have the advantage of very precise granulometry, enabling multi-stage, precise and efficient sharpening!
