The result of decades of expertise and passion, Opinel knifemakers are now part of France's heritage and part of everyone's subconscious, thanks to the efficiency and simplicity of the knives they produce.
Opinel knives are the perfect representation of pocket knives: practical, foldable, sharp and French!
This garden knife, also known as a couteau pointu, is the ideal tool for weeding or picking salads and other fruit and vegetables from your vegetable garden!
The blade:
The blade is made of Sandvik stainless steel, known for its hardness and ease of maintenance. This steel has a high carbon content of at least 0.40%, giving a very satisfactory cutting edge without being susceptible to corrosion or shock.
The blade undergoes a special 2-stage heat treatment:
- quenching: the blade is heated to over 800°C and then rapidly cooled down.
- tempering: the blade is heated again, then cooled very slowly.
Next comes the hand-finishing operation: an Opinel is sharpened at an angle of around 40° to ensure that the edge doesn't deteriorate too quickly, but is still highly effective.
The ferrule
The ferrule is a very important part of the knife: it forms the junction between the blade and the handle, making the whole piece even more solid.
The ferrule rotates, meaning that a new steel ring has been added, holding the handle and blade together. This rotating ferrule locks the blade when folded or unfolded. So you can use your knives in complete safety!
The handle:
The beechwood handle perfectly fits the shape of your hand for maximum comfort. It also features a slot for the blade. The beech wood and its varnish finish add extra strength to the knife, protecting it from external aggressions such as scratches, stains and humidity.
Care and maintenance:
We recommend washing your knife by hand, using a sponge or a clean damp cloth, then drying it immediately with another dry cloth. It's best to avoid running it under water, as this could damage the wooden handle.
