Description

Choose La Lune® whetstone for your knives and adopt a piece of history!

A piece of history to sharpen your knives

La Lune® is a French stone that has been around since the 1900s. Back then, the company that produced it was world-renowned, and the stone was even sold on the American market. Its operation lasted until 1984, when the French manufacturer was forced into bankruptcy.

In 2015, Nicolas Rollin, director and 1Stone manufacturer, worked on the takeover of the French brand La Lune®. He assembled a team of enthusiasts who worked in collaboration with geologists to locate the source of La Lune® and relaunch its operation.

The source has been found, but its location is kept secret by 1Stone, which likes to maintain the mystery. In 2021, Nicolas Rollin registered the La Lune® trademark in his own name, and is proud to be its sole manufacturer.

A very high grain to finish the edge and polish it

La Lune® is a stone cut and polished by hand on a diamond-bonded resin disc. This gives it a very soft, smooth surface.

With an average grain size of #8000, it's perfect after you've run your knives over a #1000 stone. The very fine grain of La Lune® completes the sharpening work, and also enables it to be polished.

The stone is easy to use. As it does not require soaking, you must first make a slurry with a Nagura stone from the same deposit, to activate its abrasive particles.

When the slurry is present in large quantities and only slightly diluted, the grain size of La Lune® drops to around #6000. When the mud is diluted, the grain increases to around #8000. This is how La Lune® gives you a versatile job.

If you want a grain size of around #10000, you can apply glycerine to the stone. You can also apply sharpening oil to mirror-finish the edge.

To switch from oil to water and vice versa, clean the stone with washing-up liquid. This cleaning is also essential if you decide to remove the label stuck to the surface of the stone. However, you can keep the label to separate the side to be used for sharpening from the side not to be used.

Important: this whetstone is cut, surfaced and polished by hand by Nicolas Rollin. It is a natural product whose shape, appearance, size and color differ from one stone to another.
