The 1Stone Black Shadow sharpening stone is a piece of family history. It comes from a deposit found on the land of the grandfather of the company' s CEO, Nicolas Rollin. His grandfather set up a natural stone deposit many years ago, and even today its origin remains unknown. But thanks to this grandfather's work, Nicolas Rollin can now offer you a high-quality stone for sharpening your knives.
Important: this Sharpening stone is cut, sized and polished by hand by Nicolas Rollin. It is a natural product whose shape, appearance, size and color vary from one stone to another.
This stone is made of natural black slate. It's a very dense stone, making it highly water-resistant and solid. Slate is therefore ideally suited to the manufacture of whetstones, as it is also long-lasting. In fact, slate has a lifespan of around 100 years!
Because slate is so hard, it's ideal for polishing blades. This versatile stone can also be used to sharpen kitchen knives with a very high hardness of at least 63 HRC. Its grit is extremely fine: depending on the location of the deposit from which the stone was extracted, it can range from #12000 to #15000.
Such fine grit is ideal for beginners who want their knives to have a mirror-polished finish. Its speed and ease of use enable it to achieve this result.
Slate does not need to be soaked before use. Simply moisten it and, using a Nagura stone from the same deposit, create an abrasive slurry.
The slurry contains very fine abrasive particles that need to be diluted throughout the sharpening process by gradually adding a few drops of water. The clearer the water, the more mirror-like the blade finish. However, if you want an even shinier result, you can replace the water with glycerine or special oil at the end of the sharpening process.
Please note, however, that it is necessary to clean the stone with washing-up liquid to change from water to oil (and vice versa). This cleaning is also essential to remove the label stuck to the stone. However, it does not interfere with sharpening.
