The Japanese brand Shapton offers top-quality whetstones renowned for their performance and durability. Different ranges are available to meet your exact requirements, such as the Kuromaku range shown here, or the Glass Stone range.
These are excellent stones that wear very slowly, making them highly sought-after by restoration professionals.
The famous Kuromaku Shapton stones are available in a range of grits for complete blade sharpening. Whether you need a thick grit to straighten a chipped blade or a very fine grit to sharpen the edge, the Kuromaku range is complete.
Kuromaku is the thickest stone made by Shapton. It measures around 1.5cm thick and is made of ceramic. It contains abrasive particles that are evenly distributed across its surface. This ensures fast, clean sharpening of all your blades. What's more, ceramic is known to be a very hard material, ensuring slower wear despite repeated use.
It's a stone that catering professionals appreciate for its efficiency and durability. It is perfectly suited to intensive use.
It has a 320 grit: a thick grit that quickly removes a good deal of material from your blades. This grit is ideal for all chipped blades or those that no longer cut at all. This grit should be used in the first stage of sharpening, after which the fineness of the edge should be fine-tuned. You can also use this grit on hard steels with a high HRC.
Shapton Kuromaku stones are called Splash & Go stones. This means that you don't need to immerse them to prepare them, but simply moisten them before use.
This stone comes with a protective box, which is not only intended to protect the stone. The box can also be used as a base, thanks to its non-slip rubber feet. This keeps the stone stable during sharpening. With its grooved surface, the box allows good ventilation of the stone, even when you've put it away.
Note that it is important to let the stone dry in the open air, away from any source of heat. This could crack the stone.
