Description
This Japanese Suehiro kit gently recovers the distinctive patterns of a damascus blade, which can disappear over time due to repeated sharpening and polishing.
The Suehiro kit for damascus blades includes:
- 1 metal plate with large silicone base for ease of use and stability
- 1 medium-grain polishing powder
- 1 fine-grain polishing powder
- 1 spray bottle
How to use the Suehiro kit :
We recommend using the top-of-the-range Kouseki stone before using the kit, so that the fineness of its grains polishes the blade to a perfect "mirror effect". By the way, after this step, it's normal for the blade to be highly reflective (like a mirror) and for the damascus pattern to be hard to see. This removes all scratches, leaving a clean surface on which to work.
- Apply the polishing powder to the metal plate on the silicone base. You need to cover the entire flat surface. Note that you need to use the powder best suited to your steel, depending on its hardness. You can even use both powders: first the medium-grain powder, then the fine-grain powder.
- Use the spray bottle to moisten the metal plate, taking care not to apply too much. The idea is not to let the polishing powder run down the sides of the metal plate, but to keep it firmly on the surface.
- Place the damascus surface on the metal plate, and make the same kind of movements as when sharpening on a stone: press evenly on the blade, moving back and forth. Be careful, as water makes the plate slippery, so your movements must be carefully controlled to avoid slipping the knife. Carry out these movements until the damascus pattern is visible again. Once you're sure the pattern has reappeared and is evenly visible, you're all set! (This step must be performed on both sides for double-edged knives).
- Once you've finished, clean the metal plate thoroughly of all the powder you've applied, and dry it well, as storing it still damp can lead to oxidation.
Please note: the kit allows you to blur the soft iron layer of a damascus, so the blade will still be different from its original appearance, even if the damascus will be visible again. This has no impact on printed damask patterns.
Opt for this original kit to restore an old damask knife to its former glory!
