Suehiro is a Japanese specialist in professional whetstones. He develops practical, long-lasting stones that even novices can enjoy using, since stone sharpening can be impressive if it has never been done before.
Suehiro oversees every stage in the manufacture of its stones, from research and development to production.
Here are the key phrases:
- Mix and stir ingredients in large vats
- Press each stone into a rectangle
- Allow shaped stones to dry for a short time
- Bake to set
- Carry out the final moulding by hand (a craftsman passes the stone over a grinding wheel to ensure a clean finish)
- Quality control before the stones are placed in the packaging
This whetstone comes from the Cerax range, which features stones fired at very high temperatures, making them more resistant to the risk of cracking. They are therefore durable, and also very easy to use.
Its #180 grit is considered very thick, so it is recommended for resharpening very dull blades.
How to use :
Soak the stone 5 minutes before use. You can reapply water to the surface of the stone during sharpening, when you feel it's necessary. You can do this directly by hand, or with a pipette.
After a few moments' use, you'll notice a small colored sludge forming on the surface of the stone, and this is perfectly normal. This "sludge" is even essential, as it helps to sharpen the knife, so don't clean it during the process.
After use, you can rinse the surface and clean it with a soft brush. Wipe with a dry cloth, then leave to dry in a room at room temperature (keep out of direct sunlight for faster drying).
Complementary accessories:
A small white Nagura stone (7.2 x 1.7 x 0.9 cm) is supplied with the stone. This is used to create the famous mud that facilitates the stone's action. As mentioned above, it reinforces the abrasive power of the main stone, thus increasing its effectiveness.
The #180 grit stone is glued to a white base, which stabilizes it during use. It also comes with a box that can be used for storage, as a sharpening support when in use, or as a small basin for soaking the stone before use. The box also has a space for the Nagura stone. Its black feet are removable.
Please note: the stone's dimensions may vary by a few millimetres, and its weight by a few grams - this is perfectly normal.
