Description

Find out more about the brand :

Suehiro is a Japanese specialist in professional whetstones. These stones are practical and durable, and anyone can enjoy using them, since stone sharpening can be impressive if it has never been done before.

Suehiro manages every stage in the manufacture of the stones it creates, from Research and Development to production itself. Here are the main stages:

- Mixing and stirring ingredients in large vats

- Press-molding each stone into a rectangular shape

- Allow shaped stones to dry for a short time

- Bake to set

- Carry out the final moulding by hand (a craftsman passes the stone over a grinding wheel to ensure a clean finish)

- Quality control before the stones are placed in the packaging

The model :

This whetstone comes from the Cerax series, which features stones fired at very high temperatures, making them more resistant to possible cracking. They are therefore durable, and also very easy to use, a real plus!

Its #320 grit is considered very thick, so it's recommended for resuming very dull blades.

Good to know:

To use it, soak it for 5 minutes before use. You can reapply water to the surface of the stone during sharpening, when you feel it's necessary. You can do this directly by hand, or with a pipette.

After a few moments' use, you'll notice a small colored sludge forming on the surface of the stone, and this is perfectly normal. This "sludge" is even essential, as it helps to sharpen the knife, so don't clean it during the process.

After use, you can rinse the surface and clean it with a soft brush. Wipe with a dry cloth, then leave to dry in a room at room temperature (keep out of direct sunlight for faster drying).

Please note: the stone's dimensions may vary by a few millimeters, and its weight by a few grams, but this is perfectly normal.

Accessories supplied:

A soft silicone base to stabilize the stone during use. It's removable, so you don't have to use it if you prefer to place the stone on a cloth, for example.

A small Nagura stone (7.3 x 1.8 x 1.2 cm) is supplied with the stone. This small, white model allows you to create the famous sludge that facilitates the stone's action. As we've said, this reinforces the stone's abrasive power, thus increasing its effectiveness.

Strange feeling!!!
language rating 4
The stone is effective, no doubt about it! But it generates a lot of mud, and is far too soft and tender. The Suehiro Cerax digs in too quickly and has to be soaked before use...I don't like that at all! I'd much rather have a Shapton Kuromaku or a Naniwa splash and go!

with suehiro your knives are beautiful!

sharpening on suehiro stones, whatever the grain size, is always a pleasure! I'm sometimes given badly damaged knives, but they quickly regain their edge with cerax 320! iron and stone, when in harmony, give a sensation that's hard to describe, but which I recommend to anyone starting out in sharpening!

I had two victorinox knives (a fish fillet and a monkfish knife) that needed to be resharpened without any particular problem,
Tip-Top!

Suehiro Cerax quality. The 320 grit allows you to re-profile the blade very gradually, while controlling the progress of the work. A real treat. The stone I've been missing!

A quality product, a Suehiro stone, what more can I say .... Update 23/08/2022 : And I wanted to be objective by specifying what I noticed after several months of use, that I was expecting a better quality stone equivalent to the cerax 1000 and 3000 or the 6000 shiramine. The stone is "soft" and much less abrasive than a "classic" cerax with a higher grain. I was able to test other brands, but I wasn't satisfied with the work of this stone, and it's really a bad stone. Several times, I found myself having to straighten the stone during sharpening, because it had dug in, despite light pressure, with no great result in regaining the edge of my tool, even after 15 minutes on the same face, and of course I had to soak the stone for 15 minutes before use and constantly moisten it, because it's extremely productive of mud. I had even started to use the cerax 1000 again, because it was so hard to work with this 401 ....
Wears out quickly!

After sharpening just 4 knives, it's already wearing down! I don't know if it's because of the grit or the ceramic alloy, which is supposed to wear down more slowly???
Just right

Super good stone, having tried many... very good feel when sharpening and very effective on carbon or hard stainless steels.
