Let's talk about the manufacturer:
Suehiro is a Japanese specialist in professional sharpening. They develop ergonomic, long-lasting whetstones that even novices can enjoy using, because stone sharpening can be impressive if it's never been done before.
To provide you with quality products, the manufacturer takes care of every stage in the manufacture of the stones it creates, from research and development to actual production.
Here are the main phases:
- Mixing and stirring ingredients in large vats
- Press each stone into a rectangular shape
- Allow shaped stones to dry for a short time
- Bake to set
- Carry out the final moulding by hand (a craftsman passes the stone over a grinding wheel to ensure a clean finish)
- Quality control before the stones are placed in the packaging
Let's talk about the model:
This whetstone comes from the Cerax range, which is made up of stones fired at very high temperatures, making them more resistant to the risk of cracking. They are therefore durable, and also very easy to use - big pluses!
Its #8000 grit is considered extra fine, and is therefore recommended for thorough polishing of the cutting edge.
Let's talk about use:
It should be soaked 5 minutes before use. You can reapply water to the surface of the stone during sharpening, when you feel it's necessary. You can do this directly by hand, or with a pipette.
After a few moments' use, you'll notice a small colored sludge forming on the surface of the stone, and this is perfectly normal. This "sludge" is even essential, as it helps to sharpen the knife, so don't clean it during the process.
After use, you can rinse the surface and clean it with a soft brush. Wipe with a dry cloth, then leave to dry in a room at room temperature (keep out of direct sunlight for faster drying).
Let's talk about complementary accessories:
A small white Nagura stone (approx. 7.2 x 1.7 x 0.9 cm) is supplied with the stone. This is used to create the famous mud that facilitates the stone's action.
The #8000 grain stone is glued to a white base to stabilize it during use.
A box allows you to store it, but it can also be used as a sharpening stand when in use, or as a small basin for soaking the stone before use. The box also has a space for a small Nagura stone. Its black feet are removable.
Additional information: the stone's dimensions may vary by a few millimetres, and its weight by a few grams, but this is perfectly normal.
