The blade of this Higonokami Japanese pocket knife is called "San Mai", meaning it features 3 superimposed layers of steel. Its structure is as follows: the blade core is made of highly carbon-enriched steel, and the outer layer of mild steel.
This carbon core is an asset for improving sharpness: the knife can be sharpened with precision, and will hold a sharp edge longer than standard steels.
The top layer of mild steel provides protection. This gives it a slight suppleness that makes it more pleasant to use (as too much rigidity could make it brittle).
Maintenance tips: carbon blades are sensitive to corrosion. It should therefore be washed by hand and then wiped dry with a soft cloth. Note that the color of the blade may change slightly over time. This is a normal process resulting from use (acidity of food, contact with ambient air with varying humidity, etc.). To prevent this, you can use mineral oil from time to time.
The folding system is Piedmontese: a small piece of steel protrudes from the blade and is placed on the handle. To open the blade, press down on this rod. It should be noted that the Higonokami knife has no locking system: only your thumb will press on the steel rod during use, thus naturally locking the blade.
The 12cm handle is made from a sheet of clear brass folded over the blade. This astonishingly simple system gives the knife its lightness.
Finally, it has a hole at the end for a lanyard, making it easy to carry.
