The Higonokami folding knife is emblematic of Japanese culture. It was created shortly before the 20th century, and enjoyed great success in Japan until the 1960s, when it was used by most people. Today, this knife has become a household word, as its name designates all types of Japanese folding knife. It is highly appreciated by connoisseurs for its cutting quality and traditional appearance.
The blade of this Japanese pocket knife is called "San Mai", i.e. it has 3 superimposed layers of steel (rather like a simplified damascus). The composition is as follows: the core of the blade is made of carbon steel, and the outer layer of mild steel.
The hard core enhances sharpness, since the knife can be sharpened to a greater degree, and will hold a sharp edge longer than standard steels.
The layer of mild steel protects it. This gives it a slight suppleness that makes it more pleasant to use (as too much rigidity could cause it to break), and its surface is engraved with Japanese characters for even greater authenticity.
Important: the carbon blade is sensitive to corrosion. It should therefore be hand-washed and wiped dry immediately after use. Please note that the color of the blade may change slightly over time. This is a normal process resulting from use (acidity of food, contact with ambient air with varying humidity, etc.). To prevent this, oil the blade from time to time with mineral oil.
The folding system is Piedmontese: it's an ultra-simple method consisting of a piece of steel located in the extension of the blade, on top of the handle. To open the knife, simply press down on this small piece, to draw out the blade for use.
It should be noted that the Higonokami knife has no locking system: only your thumb will press on the steel rod during use, thus naturally locking the blade.
The handle is made of black sheet steel folded over the blade. This astonishingly simple system gives the knife its lightness. It has a hole at the end for a lanyard, making it easy to carry.
It can be used every day, just like an Opinel! Discover our complete selection of Higonokami knives in 1 click!
