The Higonokami pocket knife is a mythical knife in Japan, much like theOpinel in France.
The blade of this Higonokami folding knife is composed of 3 layers of steel, a process known as San Mai.
The core of the blade is made of carbon steel. Not stainless, this steel is sensitive to rust, but it also has the particularity of being very hard, which results in an excellent cutting edge. The cutting edge is long-lasting, and can be sharpened extensively if required for incredible cutting power.
Next, a layer of softer steel surrounds the core to protect it. This process makes the blade less brittle and more resistant to corrosion. The surface of the blade is engraved with Japanese characters for added authenticity.
Important: carbon blades are sensitive to corrosion. It should therefore be hand-washed and wiped dry immediately after use. Note that the color of the blade may change slightly over time. This is a normal process resulting from use (acidity of food, contact with ambient air with varying humidity, etc.). To prevent this, oil the blade from time to time with mineral oil.
The knife handle measures 10cm. It is made of brass with a black paint finish. The brass is folded, which is why the knife is so light. An eyelet at the end makes the knife easier to handle by adding a cord. Unlike today's pocket knives, it has no locking system. The knife features a Piedmont system: a piece of steel on the top of the handle allows the knife to be opened with a single press.
